Philosophy

  1. Language is acquired through comprehensible input (Krashen’s n+1). In other words, you should find input from easy and enjoyable content sources.

  2. Direct instruction of vocabulary and grammar is usually ineffective.

  3. Daily practice should include exposure to comprehensible input and review of previously learned material. I highly recommend spaced repetition flashcard apps.

  4. Character comes before methodology in most instances. Find an approach to language learning that fits your personality.

  5. An inspiring long-term goal is required to keep you motivated.

  6. I usually recommend students focus on vocabulary acquisition and input in the first three to six months of learning a new language. Output is crucial after the six-month mark.

  7. At the intermediate plateau, deliberate practice becomes a necessity if you want to reach native-like fluency.
